Bald Men Are Weak, Poor Leaders And Not Real Men

Yesterday, as I was driving to the office, I heard a radio ad from a hair replacement company. They were obviously doing the cheesy "national buzz" advertising to complement the Inauguration next week. The ad said something to the effect that even Presidents were not bald. That bald men didn't have the confidence to lead because everyone looks at them as subordinate.

Now, they didn't say it just like that BUT that was the message they wanted to get across, playing on the insecurities of the truly weak. So, now we have a culture of men who walk around with hair replacements, hair units, hair plugs and a plethora of money-making hair oriented products that feed on men's insecurities.

How many times have you been to a party, bar, church or business meeting and just can't stop looking at "that one guys" hair? Dear guys who have bought into this insecurity lie, people behind your back actually feel sorry for you because you think you have them fooled. Worse yet, people are mortified for you because, as we noted at one party a few weeks ago on an acquaintance there, your hair substitute looks really bad.

You have bought into the lie. Seth Godin in his book "All Marketers Are Liars" talks about how marketing and advertising often tell a lie that people finally buy into. The advertising pulls back and the "lie believers" start to tell the lie and pass it through society thus making the lie even more believable.

The difference in good marketing that "lies" is that it often lays out a dream that CAN become a reality if someone believes it and "is the change they want to see." For example, a rundown neighborhood is a great place to live. More people believe it, move into the 'hood, start fixing, start helping neighbors and it indeed makes the "lie," a reality.

In the case of Bald vs. Advertiser, your lie is ridiculous and preposterous. Some of the strongest men are bald. Some of the best leaders are bald. Some of the best looking men are bald.

Leadership, esteem and ability comes from confidence and intergrity that is IN the head rather than the rug and plugs ON the head. So, hair company, I know we are in a challenging economy and you want to make money, but please shut up about "my people." Stop stereotyping us all as the insecure, sad men you prey upon. Call your commercials and ad campaigns like they are, something to the affect, "For those of you listening to this commercial who have insecurity about your appearance, we can make you look even more ridiculous than you feel inside."

Thank God I'm bald. It's a BLESSING. If I had known the joy, ease and pride I would have with my shiny head, I honestly would have shaved my head decades ago.

My Mouse Car

I had the joy of being part of the Tennessee smartcar's crew for the Gatlinburg Christmas Parade. Over 60,000 people were on hand to watch the parade. We decorated the car like a mouse, pictured above. They snapped the photo before my nose was straight and you can't see the mouse's tail. It's cool stuff.

Oh, yeah! We won the "Most Entertaining" award!

My Near Death Experience

One of my dearest clients and I went to the Tennessee State Fair on Friday night. He and I had been to Six Flags together before, so he knows I'll ride anything. He was gravely disappointed once we'd paid our admission fee to discover that Greg and I had come to the fair only to see the chickens. After he pouted for a few minutes, I agreed to consider a fair ride with him.

We found this pretty pink sparkly ride that looked like a fancy Scrambler. I said, Ah, that looks innocent enough and fun and we jumped on board. Just let me say, it was the worst experience of my life. This video gives you a taste of what I endured.

East Nashville Drummers

Chrissy Kirkwood, East Nashville resident, announced that she will be heading up East Nashville's first drum circle. The first drum circle will be on August 30th from 4-7 at the Riverside Village which is also the home of Sips Cafe, Mitchell's Deli, Castrillo's and more!

She reports that "Dan Heller, the owner of the Village has been gracious enough to offer his beautiful courtyard for this gathering. This is a free event. Everyone is welcome... drummers of all levels, dancers and spectators. It's an amazing experience to be a part of."

"I have 7 extra hand drums that you can borrow. If you need a drum, let me know and I'll be sure to bring you one. Bring anything that makes noise: shakers, cowbell, tambourine, rain sticks, etc."

I'll have to check this one out to see what it's all about.

Glow invites you to step through the darkness into another world where all illumination comes from original works of art. Admission at the door is only $5 per person. Forget a candlelit dinner - bring your date to see some art and impress the heck out of them with your cultural savvy!

The brilliance includes door prizes, live performances, and live music by a local D.J. Visitors can also enter to win a wide variety of prizes from local businesses. And you'll also be able to visit Untitled's "small works" table and find art for any budget. No matter what your taste in art, your interest is certain to be lit by the wide variety of art luminaries from across Middle Tennessee.

The art party of the summer, "Glow: An Illuminated Art Event" continues a more than decade-old Nashville tradition of self-lit and black-lit art shows. Besides being a fantastic party in the dark, Glow also raises money for the Untitled Artists Group - an artist-run non-profit organization with a variety of unique art programs.

Limelight Nashville hosts this night of uncensored art for unlimited audiences. Limelight Nashville is a spacious and stylish upscale concert and event space dedicated to supporting everything Nashville . Limelight also brings solid live music to Music City via its state-of-the-art sound equipment. As a new venue under new management, Limelight Nashville holds a promising future to spotlight local talent and events.

For the last seventeen years, Untitled has offered emerging artists opportunities to shine and develop their talents while illuminating the Nashville community with radiant artistic perspectives and incandescent artistic experiences. Untitled artists are a culturally diverse group who work democratically and cooperatively outside the traditionally conservative gallery setting.

Join us Friday, July 25th from 7 - 11:00 p.m. at Limelight Nashville, located at 201 Woodland Avenue, Nashville. A $5 donation is requested at the door to help continue the community outreach of the Untitled Artists Group. See you there!

2008 Tomato Arts Festival

I was watching "Don't Forget The Lyrics" on FOX a few seasons ago, passively, when I heard a country accent say, "I was the Tomato Queen." I perked up immediately to see one of our former "Queens" of the East Nashville festival was on one of my favorite game shows and was part of my favorite event of the year in Nashville, the Tomato Arts Festival.

If you don't know what the festival is, well, you have to visit just to really get the full effect. Tons of funky local art, tons of music, lots of kids, crazy amounts of characters and costumes all held in Five Points starting at The Garage Majal and stretching east on Woodland past I Dream of Weinee and Rumors 2.

Thanks Andy for letting us photograph your art yesterday!

This year's extravaganza is guaranteed to be the biggest and best yet. I'll be helping celebrate the official fruit of Tennessee on Saturday, August 9. Check out more information at the official website.

A Day Of Cute Stuff

Today could be no more perfect. If you are ever depressed, enjoy what I enjoyed today. First, my best friend from seventh grade, Aimee, gave birth to Tucker Dukes. I had the pure pleasure of visiting the baby floor at Baptist Hospital. Pure happiness!

Now, if the cuteness couldn't possibly be heightened any more, Gina (from my office) showed up with an SUV full of six week old puppies. I just had to dive in the middle of them. Little did I know they had tinkled all over the trunk of the SUV. I was soaked! I was meeting a buyer in a few minutes and had to go change completely. It was so worth it. Here's to the best day ever!

Lucy Needs A Home

Some dear friends of mine own what I call a dog's country club west of Nashville. Today they put out an A. P. B. for this sweet baby. Here's what they have to say about her...

http://www.woofwaggin.com

Lucy the Plott Hound has been living with us at the kennel since January. She was saved from being euthanized by someone who just decided he didn't want her anymore. He found her and her buddy running the streets about 3 1/2 years ago and he took them both in. He let Lucy into the house at some point and she killed one of his cats (she doesn't like cats), so she and her friend, Fredi, were banished to live in the backyard and garage.

They were out there for 3 years without much interaction with anyone until one day he decided he wanted to get rid of her. So he put an ad on Craigslist for 2 weeks and got no interest so decided he was going to have her put down (along with several other dogs he was fostering). Luckily we heard about this and were able to step in and save her (and her friend). She is an extreme cuddler - she LOVES to cuddle with people and would rather do nothing else! She gets along ok with other medium or large dogs. The perfect home for her would be a couch and someone to cuddle with, possibly another dog in the family.

She is extremely sweet and I love her, but she is getting very restless and unhappy living at the kennel. She really, really needs to live in a house with people! I give her as much attention as I possibly can, but she is limited to being outside in the yard, in the kitchen or in her room at the kennel. She doesn't have a lot of variety and since we are always so busy, she doesn't get as much attention and mingling as she wants or needs.

The one problem she has is that she can jump a 4 ft fence/wall with no trouble. So, she really needs a yard with a privacy fence or to be on a leash with her person when she is outside. She doesn't require a lot of physical activity. Mental stimulation and cohabitating with people would be her best situation. If you or anyone you know could give Lucy the loving home she deserves, or could FOSTER her while she is waiting for her forever home, please contact me and let me know. I've attached Lucy's flier to this email. Thank you!

A Bit Guilty?

The talk on the street is always...so how's the real estate market. Every time I meet an agent (new touch or old colleague), stories typically go down the road of....my year is going so bad. I've tried and tried to not be the happy guy at the funeral, but honestly I'm tired of it!

I love this market. I'm having absolutely the best year of my career. I didn't think I could love a year more than 2007 career-wise, with it being a banner year. My sales are up 58% from this time last year. Now, it's out there. Whew! That feels a lot better. I'm not going to complain, go along with or join the pity party. I love the challenges of the market, and the market can be good when the attitude is right.

Home Previewing

I've been previewing homes for clients over the past few weeks at various price points. I really don't understand how some people arrive at a value for their home and find professionals who will go along with them. After some of my previews, I would have been embarrassed to show ANY client some of the homes. My favorite was a home in a seven figure range south of Nashville. When I arrived, I had a hard time finding the home behind the 3 feet high grass. Once I found it, I stepped over a large assortment of "animal leftovers" on the circular drive. Inside, I found nothing less than a big ol' hot mess.

I was a great reminder to me to accept great homes with sellers who understand presenting their home in the best light at all times AND pricing it where the pro guides. I love my sellers...thanks for "getting it."

New Photoshoot

This week in the 91 degree (yes 91 degree) weather, I donned a full dark suit, tie and ladder to take off to Franklin for my latest photoshoot for some adwork I have to get done. I was so proud of the outcome I just had to share. My marketing dude, Matt, did an amazing job and is getting quite a buzz over on his flickr site about it.

Trend To Watch: Outdoor Living

Recently, I was reading up on my marketing trends with one of my favorite sources, and I noticed an article on outdoor living and the expected growth in this area. With gas prices at an all-time high at around $4.00 a gallon, we are already seeing people spending more time at home on nights and weekends. The quality and luxury of homes are essential pieces that future homesellers will need to start being more aware of. More>>

720 Boscobel Outdoor Space in Historic Edgefield.

One of the issues is when people feel "trapped" at home due to the economy, we need a break that isn't inside our own four walls. Creating and maintaining quality, outdoor living spaces is predicted to become a growing standard. As you begin to look at money-returning investments, don't forget to create spaces that promote home entertainment beyond the big screen TV!!
